On Our Way Out: the Last Shows at the Firehouse

As most of you already know, we will be moving out of the Firehouse at the end of April. It has been a rich and rewarding experience running an all-ages space and being part of the Avondale community for the last two and a half years. As our community has grown and our opportunities have blossomed, it has become increasingly difficult to continue sharing a space with another growing business, not to mention the strain on the residents living in the same building. We have decided it is best to part ways rather than continue in a situation that is undesirable for everyone involved.

With that said, we have every intention of re-emerging in a new space very soon. I had hoped to make this announcement with a new space secured, but that has yet to be worked out. It is difficult to say at this point when we might be doing shows again.

We have only four shows remaining at the Firehouse as I write this, culminating with a big last show on Saturday, April 28th. I hope you will come celebrate with us.

Upcoming Shows- 10/13/11

On Friday, October 14th, The Firehouse hosts Nashville math/noise aficionados Gnarwhal. Gnarwhal features Tyler from Yautja on drums. Joining them will be two new local bands, Red Hands and Ghost Whistle. Both bands are performing for the first time.

On Wednesday, October 19th, Retox will be at the Firehouse. Retox features members of legendary noise/grind act The Locust. Joining them will be locals Deleo and Persephone.

On Saturday, October 22nd, Fargo returns to Birmingham, bringing with them their new record. They have also recently released a cassette split with Fewer Moving Parts on Spring Street Records, and the two will be playing together for the first time after the split’s release. Abstract Artimus is Fargo’s tourmate. Local group AND will be releasing their own EP at this show. Local Quartetris will perform as well.

Picnic Reboot- Back to School

We are determined to have a picnic this summer. The Punk Rock Picnic was canceled due to poor timing. It will be back next year in its proper time in the spring. To make up for its absence this year, we are having a “Back to School Picnic” on Saturday, August 6th. There will be grillin’, a slip’n slide, homemade ice cream, bands, and a classic summer movie projected onto the side of the building. Its free. Just bring food to grill and share, friends, probably your bathing suit, and other summer picnicin’ things.

Vote on which movie you want to see in the poll on the left of this website. You can vote for up to three different movies as many times as you want. Your voice counts, especially if you are a multi-national corporation.

Tentative schedule:
Grillin’ and slip’n slide: 2pm-8pm
Bands: 2:30-7:30 (including Convictions, AND, Mooninites, Big Animal)
Summer Movie: 8pm-10pm

This Week- 6/7/11

Tonight we have a great mix of locals. Red Harp, Edifice Wrecks, and Nations all bring something different, but do it well. They also are all rarities at the Firehouse. They will be joined by touring band Woods of Ypres from Canada. They continue our recent string of metal acts.

On Saturday, we have what will be one of the biggest shows of the summer. Local juggernauts Legion, Younger Siblings, Weak Signal and Like Swans will all be performing on the same bill. They are joined by Louisville’s Xerxes. This show comes highly recommended and is only five bucks. Most of the money will be going to help Younger Siblings and Spring Street Records press their first 7 inch.

Punk Rock Picnic Postponed

We seem to have done a poor job of picking the date for the Punk Rock Picnic this year. Everyone has really had a hard time getting their projects together. The date we chose forced people to juggle their preparations with the end of the school year and the beginning of summer vacations. As a result, almost all the bands backed out and we have been forced to postpone the event.
